Many thanks to Huffington Post for the shout out. For anyone interested in the occupied Media series, the first interview (with Jeff Madrick) is posted on the top, left-hand side of this page. We hope to have our interview with Kevin Gosztola posted by tomorrow.

ReplyDeleteYeah, Taryn. You did mislabel that.
ReplyDeleteThat soldier may well be an iconic moment. Lawrence O'Donnell just showed a clearer video of the moment on his show. And the police had NO answer. Their expressions in response ranged from an attempt to appear expressionless to sheepishness. Really powerful video.
Yeah, my bad - meant to say what's there now.
ReplyDelete@CM Glass - accidentally deleted the comment - anyway, thanks for pointing that out - cleared it up
ReplyDeleteNo problem. The pic of the ANTARTICA #OWS supporters might be my favorite pic yet. Sweet and earnest.
ReplyDeleteA lot of really powerful things. With CM Glass, I love! the Antartica pic. If you've lost Antartica, you might be in trouble.
ReplyDeleteAnd the marine vet, both the original video and his interview with Keith, wow. A real moment for the OWS movement, because there is literally no answer thatcan be made to what he says. WTF are the cops doing. But, as Chris Hedges says, many of the cops sympathize with the demonstrators, and once you've lost the police and military, you're, well, 1%.
And Chris Hedges! I bookmarked that interview. He says its better than anyone, over and over. Of all the great things you posted up, Hedges was by far my favorite.
I also loved the wedding proposal. Especially that it was human microphoned as he proposed.
ReplyDeleteRachel had a little segment last night--I didn't quite get the specifics, but essentially, OWS protesters had occupied a place where a couple was going to get married. So, the protesters left so the couple could have their ceremony without being disturbed. But, turns out, the couple wanted the protesters there and sought them out to pose with them.
This is something so different than the angry divisiveness and strutting resentment that has been promoted by the media and politicians over the past decades.
The media has to portray hostility and violence between the OWS and the police in order to create a climate of anxiety (and fear) within the police force to maintain control of the police. In the final analysis, once a sufficient number of police decide, "Screw it, these people aren't a threat to ME," TPTB will see a diminishing willingness to, in the vernacular, beat heads.
ReplyDeleteAll most cops want to do is their job and then to retire after twenty years. They have families. They have to meet the rent, pay the bills, send their kids to decent schools, and etc. etc. etc. They are part of the 99% too.
With that in mind ...
The ideal solution is to have police stopping other police.
The only way I know of to do that is to have a "working relationship" between OWS and the local police. I suggest this can be done on the basis of mutual need and mutual respect generated by humanizing the Police/Protester and Protester/Police social interaction to lower the tension.
On both sides.
What I would like to suggest is:
OWS has Union support. Somebody, in one of those Unions, already has a long time personal contact to people within the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association. Find that person and have them invite representatives from the PBA to a meeting, if at all possible off-site in "neutral" territory, and talk.
Maybe nothing will come of it. But something MAY come out it.
I was really happy to see the turnout in Zootown, Taryn. Way to represent!
ReplyDeleteThe way revolutions are won and the coup d'etat's are finalized are when the police and army refuse to be the enforcers of the power elite. When the police lay down their batons and the national guard refuses to fight their own, then the power elite will no one to protect them.
